Water Meter Installation Requirements
The installation position should ensure that the pipeline is filled with water so that bubbles will not be concentrated in the meter.
Water meter installation requirements. A single internal manifold meter carrier is typically 65 mm wide x 110mm long and requires 160mm between the centres to enable the meters to be screwed in. In all cases the meter must be installed so that at all flow rates there is a full pipe of water on both the intake and discharge sides of the meter. And a water meter is typically characterized by the numerical value of q3 in cubic meters per hour and the ratio of q3 to q1. Examples of various meter accessories are meter setters meter couplings and meter flanges.
Provide a state wide protocol for the installation of department approved water meters. After the water meter is installed fill the pipe with water slowly to avoid damaging the water meter by high speed airflow. This represents the highest flow and the minimum flow rate of the water meter device. Avoid installing the water meter at the high point of the pipeline.
Provide information for water users and stakeholders of the department s legislation and standards relating to water meters. In a new meter installation. The following standards apply to water meter installations within the district. It is to be fixed securely to the wall and if located in a cupboard will typically protrude 250mm from the wall.
Each licence to take water requires the licensee to install and maintain water meters to measure the volume of water abstracted. To reduce turbulence ensure that there is a length of pipe that is at least 10 times its diameter free of any bends or fittings before the meter being installed and at least 5 times its diameter after the meter being installed see fig 2. Turn water supply line off as noted above. It must likewise be fixed securely to the wall.
Water meter flow rates the flow rate characteristics of a water meter is defined by the values of q1 through q4. Licensed water users have been required to install water meters to account for surface water use and groundwater use since 1998. No meter with flow totalisers attached shall be installed deeper than 1 5 meters below ground level. Ensure water meters are correctly fitted to provide accurate water use information for water resource management and planning purposes.
Water meter accuracy is affected by excessive water turbulence see fig 1. 1 a minimum of eight diameters of straight pipe upstream and downstream of the centerline of the meter i e no bends or valves must be provided to limit turbulence at the meter. Check on local codes check valves are often required as part of the meter installation.
